During this time, he’s learned anew the important role HR plays in the success of a business. Since success in the corporate environment hinges on the people who do the day-to-day work, Doug Battista affirms that human resources actually plays an extremely important role in the business world today.
According to Doug Battista, the country is likely heading into an era when competition for good workers becomes fierce. Numbers are still sketchy but many estimates have millions of jobs going unfilled as soon as the year 2018. This is due to the large number of baby boomers who are now leaving the workforce in droves, Doug Battista explains, with not enough Generation X-ers to fill these positions.
Battista also notes that the shift from a manufacturing economy to a service and high tech economy has left America with a deficit of skilled workers. In short, says Doug Battista, there are workers available; however, they don’t have the skills necessary to meet the current needs of businesses. The transition from an employer’s market to an employee’s market is difficult in the best conditions, says Doug Battista. But in this case, there simply won’t be enough talented employees to fill the available jobs, leaving HR departments scrambling to offer perks.
Recruiting talented employees—especially for specialized areas where talented people are hard to find—is only the first step, Doug Battista states. According to Doug Battista, once the employee reports to work, the real work of HR begins. It is the job of a human resources department to support employees in everything from processing overtime to helping with grievance procedures. But human resources goes beyond that, says Battista.
Human resources bears the brunt of responsibility for motivating employees during tough times, like the ones experienced in recent years, Doug Battista adds. With no raises and the possibility of layoffs looming, Doug Battista has seen many HR departments tasked with boosting sagging morale.
Research supports the belief that employees who are engaged are more productive, reports Doug Battista. By motivating through workshops and retraining supervisors, businesses can make up for downturns in earnings. In this regard, HR adds value to a company by retaining employees through tough times so that when business picks up, good employees are in place to handle the new workload.
HR also adds a valuable service when personnel budgets must be cut. As tough as this is, Doug Battista explains that HR staff often helps by identifying those eliminations that will have minimal impact. Once it’s time to make those tough cuts, HR steps in and smoothes the transition, dealing with severance packages and helping reassure the staff that remains so that workflow isn’t interrupted, concludes Doug Battista.
